Training and Education

The Division of Neurology at Duke University Medical Center demonstrates a strong history of excellence and innovation by fostering knowledge and experience through our residency and fellowship programs. The foundations of these programs are built upon the resources of our facilities.

The Facilities

Hospitals
Duke University Hospital is one of the largest hospitals in the country (licensed for 989 beds).

The Duke North Division houses the inpatient units for Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Medicine, as well as Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics/Gynecology, the Emergency Room/Trauma Center, the Operating Suite, and the Radiology Center. Included in the inpatient units are the Stroke Acute Care Unit and the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit. All inpatient rooms are single occupancy which facilitates doctor/patient interaction and teaching.

The Duke South Division contains most on-site outpatient clinics including the Neurology Clinics, Clinic 1L. This clinic is shared with Neurosurgery, Spine Surgery, and the Brain Tumor Center thus facilitating multidisciplinary care for patients. The Psychiatry inpatient unit and Clinical Research Unit for inpatient research protocol patients are also located in Duke South.

Attached to the North Division is the Duke University Eye Center which provides general and specialist ophthalmologic referral to approximately 25,000 patients a year.

Across Erwin Road from Duke University Hospital is the Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center (DVAMC). The DVAMC (502 beds) is the major VA referral center for the Southeast. The inpatient Neurology Ward is located adjacent to the Neurophysiology Laboratory. The Epilepsy / Sleep Disorder Center at DVAMC is the regional referral center for the VA and cares for both inpatients and outpatients including surgical evaluation for epilepsy.

The Duke Clinic at Morreene Road is a nearby offsite location housing specialty clinics including the Pain Clinic, Muscular Dystrophy Clinic, ALS Clinic, Memory and Movement Disorder Clinic. The Neurology Clinical Research Organization is also located at this site. This organization is part of our division and coordinates our clinical trials. Our third outpatient location is in North Durham. Three general neurologists practice along side other medical specialty groups in this clinic.

Division of Neurology research activity is centered in the Bryan Research Building located next to the Medical Center Library. Also centered in this building is the Department of Neurobiology. Other research space is located within DUMC and DVAMC.

Library
The Medical Center Library is located between Duke North and South and contains approximately 270,000 volumes and receives 3,000 journal titles. Medline Search (OVID) is also available. The neurology residents' library is located in Duke South. Computer access, as well as recent journals and textbooks are provided.

Residents are given a copy card to utilize at the Medical Center Library and a copying machine is also available in the office of the Program Coordinator in Duke South.
