Neuroscience Critical Care

Duke University Medical Center is seeking applications for NeurocriticalCare Fellowship Positions.  We seek board-eligible or certified neurologists who are interested in subspecialty training in neurocritical care.  One-year clinical and two-year research/clinical fellowships are available.

The Duke Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is a 16-bed high volume facility treating all types of neurologic critical illness.  Duke is a Level 1 Trauma Center and Certified Stroke Center.  We have a team of 6 neurointensivists from the Departments of Neurology and Anesthesiology and a team of critical care nurse practioners and residents that staff the unit 24 hours per day.  We have outstanding neurosurgeons andneurointerventionalists who do a high volume of cases.  Fellows will gain proficiency in the medical management of the critically ill patient.  Specific skill sets include:  Transcranial doppler, carotid ultrasound, endotracheal intubation, traditional and ultrasound-guided central venous line placement, arterial line placement, pulmonary artery catheterization, lumbar puncture/drains, continuous EEG monitoring, microdialysis, ventriculostomy management, ventilator management, and bronchoscopy.  In addition to time spent in the Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit, fellows will complete rotations in the medical intensive care units, surgical intensive care units, and operating rooms (neuroanesthesiology).  Fellows will participate in the Duke Critical Care Curriculum which is an organized collection of lectures, teaching conferences, and web-based learning modules.  Upon completion, fellows will have the knowledge base and clinical skills to care for a broad range of critically ill patients, both in the neuro-ICU and beyond.
