Course on Advanced EMG and EMG-Guided Chemodenervation

March 13 - 15, 2009

Course Directors: Janice M. Massey, Donald B. Sanders, and Vern Juel

Featured Faculty: Erik Stalberg

Overview:
This course is designed to introduce practicing electromyographers and those in training to advanced concepts and techniques in EMG, and the use of EMG-guidance in chemodenervation. Registration will be limited to assure a personalized experience. A limited number of scholarships are available for neurology residents and fellows.  A letter from the Program Director or Chairman must accompany registration.

For over 25 years, Dr. Stalberg and colleagues have organized courses like this all over the world. Recently retired as Chair of the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology at Uppsala, Sweden, Dr.Stalberg is best-known as developing the technique of Single Fiber EMG (SFEMG). Courses like this initially served to introduce SFEMG, using a small-group, hands-on format. The scope of these courses has expanded over the years to include other advanced techniques that are not included in many training programs, such as quantitative analysis of motor unit potentials, interference pattern analysis, and other new concepts of neurography.

The increasing use of chemodenervation in the treatment of focal dystonias creates a need for expert training in the use of EMG guidance to maximize the efficiency of botulinum toxin injections.

Ultrasonography is rapidly achieving a clinical role in the assessment of carpal tunnel syndrome and other focal neuropathies.  This is an opportunity to see how this non-invasive visualization technique can be integrated into an EMG laboratory to complement the electrophysiologic findings.

Format:
This will be a 2 1/2 day course, running from Friday through mid-day Sunday. Friday will be devoted to didactic sessions on the use of EMG-guided chemodenervation in focal dystonias and spasticity, including torticollis, writer's cramp, and spasmodic dysphonia, with selected small group demonstrations. Saturday will include lectures and demonstrations on selected topics in EMG, including SFEMG, Newer Concepts of Neurography, Motor Unit Potential Quantitation, Interference Pattern Analysis, Repetitive Nerve Stimulation and Ultrasonography of Peripheral Nerves. Sunday morning will be devoted to a Symposium with presentations by colleagues and former trainees of Dr. Sanders.

Faculty:
This will consist of the course organizers and a small number of others selected on the basis of their expertise and participation in previous courses.

Sponsors:
Financial and logistical support will be provided by Allergan, Inc., Alpine Biomed and Teca/Viasys.

CME approval for 21 AMA PRA Category 1 credits.
